BIOGRAPHY
Qicheng Zhang is a passionate young conductor who is always on the outlook for new music innovations and opportunities. In addition to his passion with the new an improved, he is well rooted in the foundations oftraditional music, expert in Symphony, Concerto, Opera, Ballet, Chinese Traditional Music and other performance forms.
His conducting experience started as the assistant conductor of the China Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, then moved on to be a guest conductor of the Imperial Nine Symphony Orchestra, and conductor of the Beijing Language and Culture University Arts Department, he served as a conductor as well. Over the years, he collaborated with numerous outstanding orchestras, including Beijing Concert Hall Orchestra, China National Traditional Orchestra, China National Symphony Orchestra Chorus, Central Opera House Chorus, Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, Wiener Klassi Symphony Orchestra, Tianjin Symphony Orchestra and Xiamen Philharmonic Orchestra, etc. Through these collaborations, he cultivated a refined artistic vision that seeks to unite diverse traditions and perspectives —bridging East and West, innovation and heritage, performers and audiences. These experiences enriched his interpretative depth, enhanced his rehearsal leadership, and shaped his identity as a conductor driven by both passion and purpose.
In his musical career, Qicheng has been selected multiple times for the Youth Conductor Talent Training Program and the Opera Conductor Talent Training Program. And he was the Winner ofthe Gold Award at the International Johannes Brahms Orchestral Conducting Competition 2024 in Vienna, the Talent Program, the National Scholarship Recommendation List, and the First Class Scholarship of the Academy, etc. These honors and opportunities not only attest to Qicheng ’ s artistic growth and commitment, but also fortify his understanding of the conductor ’s calling. As the sole figure in the orchestra who creates no sound, the conductor ’s role lies beyond technical mastery—it embodies vision, leadership, and a profound devotion to the art. Such experiences have instilled in him an ambition tempered by humility, and a resolve to inspire and unify both musicians and audiences.
He is Master of Music student in Orchestra Conducting at The Johns Hopkins University ’ s Peabody Institute, studying with Professor Marin Alsop; from which he graduated with a Bachelor's degree in conducting under professor Ye Jin.
